Every day in our program, our Youth Development Mentors (YDMs) are out at schools and on fields in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles changing lives through the sport of rugby. These awesome folks are working with our participants to teach them to Go Forward, Play What They See, Be Try Makers Not Try Scorers, Switch On, and Get There. One of these amazing YDMs is Joe Burson-Ryan.
Joe grew up in San Jose, California and has been #growingthegame for 6 years. In High School Joe played for Bellarmine College Prep. To keep active and competitive during the summer, Joe is playing for the Olympic Club ‘s 7’s squad. During the school year Joe plays as fly half for The University of San Francisco Rugby Club.
When asked about the best part of being a #YDM, Joe responded by saying, “ Seeing the kids work hard at practice and seeing that hard work pay off in the tournament. Seeing all the kids getting excited to play different schools and give it their all is really great to be a part of.”
Joe’s favorite part of rugby is the friendships. Through rugby he has made connections with others from across the state and around the country. He believes that rugby is the epitome of what a community is and it is something that can bring individuals together.
Outside of playing rugby, Joe is working towards a history major. Joe is also an extremely avid Lord of the Rings Fan.
