On a crisp, bright, sunny day over 100 kids, parents and coaches convened at Chelsea Waterside Field for the first Elementary School Spring Flag Rugby Tournament of the season in NYC. 8 teams competed from 6 different programs: PS208 (x2), PS282 (x2), All Saints (Hoboken), Long Island City Youth Rugby, Booker T. Washington and Manhattan RFC.
With a ton of positive energy on tap, the teams each competed in 3 pool matches before being seeded for the playoffs. In addition to some natural talent, vision and pace being on display; together the young participants continued to embrace our Values-in-Action, being Try Makers and supporting each other, Getting There with some incredible try-saving flagging attempts, Playing what they Saw making great decisions and continuing to Go Forward even when things may have not being going their way.
After pool play, Long Island City played All Saints in a consolation match drawing 3-3, with a ton of effort and smiles. PS208’s strong contingent played each other for an in-house consolation where, well, 208 was the winner! The plate final saw a nail biter between MRFC and BTW with Manhattan just scraping through for the win with a last minute try. Then, having swept every match in Pool Play, the teacher coached PS282 teams competed against each other in the Cup Final, taking home yet another trophy. Asking “is your trophy cabinet big enough for all these trophies” their coach responded “haha, they’re now all over the school as we don’t have enough room for them”. What’s awesome with this program is that they display excellent athleticism on the field and their coaches are constantly reinforcing our Values-in-Action from the sidelines. A great example of a positive teacher-run program!
Thus, it was appropriate that Jayde from 282 was recognized by coaches from opposing teams as a Go Forward Champion. She was honored in front of the full crowd along with Yaya from BTW and Joey from LIC. Our Go Forward Together Champions are players who have exhibited great attitude during game time.
Wrapping up the awards at 2:15pm, having given three cheers to our Go Forward Champions, we departed to enjoy the rest of the afternoon’s sunshine. We hope this is the first of many beautiful spring day tournaments to come (finally)!
