Over the weekend our Coach Education team traveled to Washington D.C. to work alongside Washington D.C. Youth Rugby delivering a 1 day Rugby4Good workshop to physical education teachers from throughout the D.C. area.
23 coaches attended the workshop which combined classroom theory with practical sessions where coaches put into practice new methods and techniques for effective coaching. The workshop focused on how these techniques can not only achieve athletic outcomes but also positive youth development.
The Rugby4Good coach training is different from other youth rugby trainings in that in addition to offering coaches the opportunity to effectively engage their students with fun games, it focuses largely on how to build a team culture and go-forward mindset that leads to success not just on the field but off the field. In addition to unearthing talented athletes, Rugby4Good coaches are seeing students perform better in school, and develop valuable attributes proven by research to increase life outcomes, such as positive self identify and a future focus.
It was clear that all the coaches and teachers attending were invested in the learning process as they shared ideas with one another and had challenging questions for our Coach Education team, allowing for better understanding and growth. Their energy and passion for youth development was apparent and they quickly bought in to the Rugby4Good coaching curriculum.
Coaches were introduced to the Play Rugby USA Rugby4Good curriculum with the chance to put it into practice throughout the day. Our comprehensive online curriculum includes hundreds of games complete with diagrams and videos, and over 30 ready-to-coach lesson plans, giving any coach or teacher what they need to jump start their own Rugby4Good program.
We look forward to working with Washington D.C. Youth Rugby again, and wish them all the best as they grow the game!
