LA partnersIn Los Angeles, we work with four primary after school program providers: Beyond the Bell (BTB), After-School All-Stars (ASAS), LA’s Best and the Sheriff’s Youth Academies League (YAL). We are also involved with the Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF), Emerson middle school, Hollywood Schoolhouse, together with outreach through the Rico Get Better Foundation, Let’s Move CA and Heart of Los Angeles events.

Play Rugby California owes most of it’s success to the amazing LA84 Foundation, which was established after the 1984 Olympics to help grow youth sports in the greater Los Angeles area. Through this generous support, Play Rugby USA has been able to expand it’s programs from 6 to 100 schools over the past four years, creating a pathway for students to play one of the most exciting sports in the world.

This program is one of the most successful partnerships in Los Angeles, due to the fantastic train-the-trainer model adopted by Beyond the Bell since 2011. This program now boasts almost 50 schools, and sees 30 elementary schools take part in each tournament, as well as 18 middle schools. This strategic expansion will hopefully soon see high school rugby programs begin in 2014.

The ASAS program is the oldest one in Los Angeles, having seen students take part in the 2010 pilot season. Since then over 25 elementary and middle schools have enjoyed flag rugby in the East Los Angeles region. Like BTB, the dedicated staff at the All-Stars have ensured that students have fallen in love with the sport of rugby.

LA's Best Logo

Due to a very busy sporting schedule for LA’s Best, their Play Rugby USA season is a hot one in the Los Angeles summer! This fortunately hasn’t prevented participation, with record attendance at the 13 elementary sites, often sending two teams from each site to our tournaments.

The most recent edition to Play Rugby USA’s program in 2013, the Youth Academies League has seen students from 8-15 years of age take part in an exciting pilot season. Students competed in two different age divisions, taking part in the action-packed BTB and ASAS tournaments. This is yet another superb partnership for Play Rugby USA.
