Q: Many people say that the key to successful growth in the USA is to get children playing the game at an early age, what steps is Play Rugby USA taking to make that happen?

A: I agree, arguably in the long term developing the grassroots of the game is the only sustainable way of ensuring successful growth of rugby in the USA. Play Rugby USA is primarily an educational-focused youth development program, so we're dedicated to getting rugby into after school programs and PE curriculums of schools and youth organizations. Rather than building a community-based or club program which can be challenging in urban areas, we're taking the game to the students as a tool for them to develop character, fitness and academic improvement. Therefore, we have developed various curriculums, training programs and coaching structures to support the incorporation of the game into America's educational infrastructure.

PROGRAM UPDATES

SUMMER WRAP UP

The summer season was a resounding success for Play Rugby as we partnered with 15 organizations / schools coaching well over 700 students in 5 boroughs! From Staten Island to Westchester, students were being introduced to the dynamic and exciting sport of flag rugby, plus learning a little bit about the traditions and history of the game. We coached students as young as kindergarten right through to grade 9. The Play Rugby coaching staff were extremely impressed with the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by all participants – great job everyone!

This summer we welcomed Xavier High School and Thurgood Marshall Academy to the Play Rugby family and continued our fantastic partnership with the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation. In Westchester, campers at the New York Athletic Club had 4 weeks of professional coaching and from all reports rugby was a big success!

Now we turn our attention to the upcoming school year and fall season – it’s shaping up to be another action packed season!
