Two students from Monroe Academy for Visual Art & Design in the Bronx shared their experiences at the St. Bonaventure Rugby Camp this summer. This was the first year of programming at Monroe so we’re thrilled to see students learning and getting a lot out of the program so quickly!
To help us pay for these amazing opportunities and to continue to build a college going culture, our Program Director Christian Mayo is raising funds on Crowdrise. Check out the campaign here to donate or join the fundraising effort: https://www.crowdrise.
It was fun and the camp instructors really made sure we were having a great time. I definitely consider going to Saint Bonaventure for college, the campus was beautiful and wasn’t to hard to get through. There were a couple of people that I met that i cant wait to work with
The camp was great and enjoyed it very much. The campus was awesome and clean and Bonaventure is one of my choices [for college][/for]. I met some players from the Bonaventure rugby team and Coach Clarence. I thought they were pretty cool and learned a lot from them. I am looking forward into going back!
One of the cornerstones of our program is to teach our participants to Go Forward. The hand-off process for many our participants when they advance is to go on to successful academic and athletic careers in college. To help them achieve this, we are committed to building a college going culture throughout our programs. We’ve already seen great success as 90% of our participants expect to attend college and a number of this year’s graduating seniors from our Rugby Academy are enrolled in college and plan to continue playing. One way that we’re building this college going culture is by highlighting the playing opportunities available to college students as well as the increasing number of athletic scholarships available for rugby athletes, giving students the opportunity to attend colleges they may not otherwise be able to.
To give our participants exposure to college rugby and the collegiate environment, this summer Play Rugby USA provided a record number of scholarships for our students to attend collegiate rugby camps across the country. These camps offer students the chance to visit college campuses outside of NYC and to meet and learn from other student athletes and coaches from all over the US. A total of 17 students from 9 different NYC public schools have attended or are scheduled to attend the following camps this summer:
*St. Bonaventure University
* Nike Camp at Hofstra
* Bowdoin College
* Life University
* US Collegiate Camp at Dartmouth
* Cal Berkeley, San Francisco
These transformative events are made possible by the generous support of the universities and their corporate sponsors, our own fundraising efforts, and organizations like the Rugby Opportunity Fund (ROF) which was founded in 2008 to sponsor at-risk high school rugby players to attend University of California Summer Rugby Camps. Kester Wise and Ian Tong of the ROF helped raise funds to allow three PRUSA participants to attend the camp at Cal Berkeley.
