On Saturday June 11th we hosted the 9th Annual AIG NYC Rugby Cup where nearly 800 student athletes made up 66 teams and came together to celebrate the youth rugby community in NYC and to compete in the biggest flag rugby tournament on the East Coast.

Staff and players had there fingers crossed leading up to the event with Saturdays forecast looking likely to effect the days games, however we were welcomed by beautiful NYC weather on the day. Each team was kitted out with tournament jerseys representing one of Olympic nations, as we are currently in an Olympic year with the Rio Olympics on the horizon. Students get to keep these unique jerseys and can use them to keep track of how many times their team has played in the NYC Rugby Cup! The jerseys, sponsored by Canterbury of North America, are a favorite part of the day.

Thanks to Sally Voyles and David Treussard for the photos!

Let the games begin!

  • Founder Mark Griffin kicked off the day by welcoming teams, family, and fans to Randall’s Island and expressed excitement g features of the day, including having participants ranging in age from 3 through 18 with the “Rugger Tots” program going from strength to strength, powered by AIG. The Opening Ceremony featured the National Anthem of which everyone in attendance sung a long to! Founder Mark worked hard to be ‘Son of the year’ by facetiming his mother while everyone sung her Happy Birthday! The air was buzzing with excitement as teams dispersed to prepare for kickoff of the first pool play games at 10am.

Thanks to our special guest: Diane Dixon!

We were lucky enough to have Olympic Gold Medalist, Diane Dixon on hand to present some of the awards. We hope you enjoyed this rugby experience Diane!

End of an Era – The Boomerang Returns Home

Saturday was bittersweet for the team at Play Rugby US as it marked their very last NYC Rugby Cup for our legend, Christian Mayo. Mark’s first ever employee will be shifting back home to his native Australia. Mayo has been integral in the development of PRUSA and has developed many strong relationships with key partners, like the DOE that will ensure the success of PRUSA moving forward.

Thank you!

This incredible day was made possible by the support of our generous sponsors, as well as the hard work of 44 dedicated volunteers. We’d also like to say thank you to our PRUSA Staff who dedicated many long hours to making sure this was a rewarding day for everyone involved. You can check out the Official PRUSA Photo Album below, but some of our favorite photos from the day were shared with us by students and their parents and fans! The Community Photos album on Facebook, has photos and videos from our whole community and you can add yours by posting on Twitter with the hashtag #RoadToRandalls.

Thank you again to everyone involved in making Saturday such a huge success. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.

  1. At this time of serious concerns over the direction our country’s political leaders are taking us – it is so very important to see WeThePeople drawn more into the strong, positive, healthy values of rugby thru PlayRugbyUSA. By following these values, we will always be a strong, positive society.
