This past Saturday, June 7, we held the 7th Annual AIG NYC Rugby Cup in the best weather we have had in 4 years! 60 teams (720 players) and their families, friends, coaches, and teachers came out to the all day tournament on Randall’s Island Fields 70-75. As in the past, there were competitions in three divisions:

  • Elementary School: 16 teams
  • Middle School Co-Ed: 32 teams
  • Middle School All-Girls

We also had some wonderful non-rugby activities for the teams to participate in, thanks to our partnership with Army Week NYC and Hope For The Warriors. These included relay races, a station to write letters to troops serving overseas, flag rugby pick up games with our high school volunteers, and a nutrition education station run by our staff member Losi. There was some great sportsmanship and rugby skills on display all day, as we instituted a new “Green Card” program where we acknowledged and recognized individuals throughout the day whose behavior showcased our program values. Following the Collegiate theme of the day, each school adopted a US College and learned about them in the leadup to the tournament. Every team received a set of Canterbury of New Zealand jerseys to take play in and take home that had the name of their selected college on it. At the end of the day, 11 awards were given out amongst the three divisions.
